Torricelli's curtain: Morphology of horizontal laminar jets under gravity

چکیده
Viscous fluid exiting a long horizontal circular pipe develops complex structure comprising primary jet above and smaller secondary below with thin curtain connecting them. We present here combined experimental, theoretical numerical study of this 'Torricelli's curtain' phenomenon, focusing on the factors that control its morphology. propose model for in which particle trajectories result from composition two motions: component corresponding to evolving axial velocity profile an axisymmetric viscous jet, vertical due free fall under gravity. The predicts well trajectory but somewhat less jet. suggest remaining discrepancy may be explained by surface tension-driven (Taylor-Culick) retraction Finally, direct simulation reveals recirculating 'Dean' vortices sections placing Torricelli's firmly within context flow curved pipes.

Simulation of local scour caused by submerged horizontal jets with Flow-3D numerical model
One of the most concerning issues for researchers is to predict the shape and dimensions of the scour pit nearhydraulic structures such as the base of bridges, weirs, valves and stilling basins due to both financial and humanhazards induced by destruction of the structure. As the scour issue has its own complexity in relation to themultiplicity of effecting factors on it, in this study therefor...
متن کاملInteraction of Synthetic Jets with Laminar and Turbulent Boundary Layers
The interaction between circular synthetic jets and flat-plate laminar/turbulent boundary layers is investigated using CFD simulations in this study. For turbulent boundary layer simulations, large eddy simulation (LES) is applied so as to obtain more accurate flow details. The simulation results are validated using both existing experimental data and numerical results obtained from other resea...
متن کاملLaminar Free Convection of Nanofluid Flow in Horizontal Porous Annulus
A numerical study has been carried out to investigate the heat transfer by natural convection of nanofluid taking Cu as nanoparticles and the water as based fluid in a three dimensional annulus enclosure filled with porous media (silica sand) between two horizontal concentric cylinders with 12 annular fins of 2.4mm thickness attached to the inner cylinder under steady state conditions. The gove...
متن کاملProteomic Analysis of Coprinopsis cinerea under Conditions of Horizontal and Perpendicular Gravity
Coprinopsis cinerea was employed to investigate the fungal response to gravity. Mycelium growth revealed a consistent growth pattern, irrespective of the direction of gravity (i.e., horizontal vs. perpendicular). However, the fruiting body grew in the direction opposite to that of gravity once the primordia had formed. For the proteomic analysis, only curved-stem samples were used. Fifty-one pr...
متن کاملImpinging laminar jets at moderate Reynolds numbers and separation distances.
An experimental and numerical study of impinging, incompressible, axisymmetric, laminar jets is described, where the jet axis of symmetry is aligned normal to the wall. Particle streak velocimetry (PSV) is used to measure axial velocities along the centerline of the flow field. The jet-nozzle pressure drop is measured simultaneously and determines the Bernoulli velocity. The flow field is simul...
